“Likes for Bikes” Uses Facebook to Provide Bikes to Children With Disabilites

For most children, riding a bike is nothing out of the ordinary. But for a child who struggles to even walk, having that same opportunity can transform their life.

Variety, the Children’s Charity of Pittsburgh, recently launched a new initiative to provide adaptive bikes to children with disabilities. The bikes give these children the gift of typical childhood experiences, mobility, and freedom. The program, called “My Bike,” builds custom bikes for local children who have limited mobility. Variety’s goal is to provide 200 bikes by the holiday.

With a price tag of approximately $1,800 for each bike, these bikes are cost-prohibitive for most families. But this holiday season, individuals and companies throughout the city are stepping up to raise funds for this inspirational cause.

One local law firm was inspired to contribute, and is using social media to help.

Edgar Snyder & Associates has announced a “Likes for Bikes” social media campaign to raise awareness for the “My Bike” program by donating dollars for Facebook “Likes.” The firm will donate $1 for each new “Like” received on their Facebook page. They plan to meet the goal of 3,600 new “Likes,” the amount needed to provide two children with bikes this holiday season.

Since 1982, Edgar Snyder & Associates has handled many cases helping children with injuries and disabilities. Attorney Snyder and his team were inspired to support the initiative after viewing a feature on the local news.

“It’s inspiring to see how the adaptive bikes give freedom and joy to these special kids,” said Attorney Edgar Snyder. “For a child with a disability, getting a bike may mean the chance to socialize with friends or experience independence for the first time. We’re honored to partner with Variety the Children’s Charity.”
