For the 6th time in the past 5 months, Liokareas, a Pittsburgh-based Greek Olive Oil company has earned international recognition for its collection of award-winning olive oils. This time receiving the Gold Award for its Wild Extra Virgin Olive Oil at the 2019 New York International Olive Oil Competition in New York City.
The NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition is the largest olive oil quality contest and its annual listing of award winners is widely considered the most trusted guide to the year’s best extra virgin olive oils. “There are more entries from more nations than anywhere else. For us, being a company that operates in Greece and sells our product in the US, it is the perfect venue for us. It may be one the most difficult competitions in which to win an award, and for us, it is one of the most prestigious,” said Peter Liokareas.
From the rocky mountain olive groves of Mani overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the humble wild olive found its way to New York City and immediately stole the hearts of the world’s most sophisticated palates. Harvested from the feral uncultivated clusters of olive trees interspersed among their more attractive and popular brethren, the wild olive and its indescribable rich taste lit up the city that never sleeps and earned itself a spot on the official index of The World’s Best Olive Oils.
Harvesting wild olives is very difficult and is done exclusively by hand and cold pressed immediately after harvesting. Liokareas simply takes what Mother Nature gives it. There aren’t many trees and there aren’t many bottles, but the flavor is…wild.
The NYIOOC Gold Award runs the tally of international awards to 9 in just the first 4 years of the company’s existence. With this award Wild Extra Virgin Olive Oil now joins the ranks of other Liokares multi-award winners such as, Early Harvest Greek Extra Virgin Olive Oil , Estate Grown Greek Orange Olive Oil and it’s most popular product Late Harvest Greek Lemon Oil. Previous awards have been earned in other international competitions from Los Angeles, to Jerusalem to Athens.
Peter credits his family’s “never-ending and incredibly strong determination and focus on producing high quality olive oil” for the young company’s recent success. He states, “There are so many pieces to the puzzle of producing high quality EVOO, and they all are critical, but it does all begin with family, tradition and experience. We have been doing this for over 150 years and 5 generations, and every year we learn something new.”
