Manager at hhgregg Thrills Children at Mental Health Center with Generous Gift

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pittsburgh, PA – Steven is a lanky 15 year old with shaggy brown hair and an intent look on his face. He is playing a basketball video game with a friend, William, and he is down by five points with just a few minutes to go in the fourth quarter. As time expires and Steven’s desperation three-point shot clangs harmlessly off the rim, William lets out a joyous shout as both jump to their feet before collapsing back onto the couch with smiles on their faces.

It is a scene that could have taken place in almost any living room in America, but it happened to play out at The Bradley Center, a regional behavioral and mental health treatment center located in Robinson Township. Steven and William live on the same residence hall at Bradley, receive therapy there, go to classes at Bradley’s on-campus school, and receive guidance for planning their futures from Bradley’s staff. Like most of the children at Bradley, both boys have mental and behavioral health disorders as well as histories of trauma. All of the children work hard to overcome their personal challenges, and moments like Steven and William’s play out on a nightly basis. But those moments may have come to an end, if not for the generosity of one local businessman.

When John Cool, Regional Manager for hhgregg, took a tour of The Bradley Center, he was so moved by the children’s stories that he wanted to help in whatever way he could. The Bradley Center has four residence halls, with multiple televisions on each hall to give all 100 children living there access to their favorite movies, television shows, and video games. But those televisions were nearly ten years old, dodgy, and very bulky. Cool took one look at them and knew how he could make a difference.

Two weeks later, an hhgregg truck pulled into Bradley’s parking lot carrying eight 50” flatscreen televisions with wall mounts. These new televisions had all of the children overjoyed.

“The kids were ecstatic,” said Lisa Fox, Chief Executive Officer at Bradley. “Now they don’t have to worry about the television going out during a movie or while they’re playing a game. It’s wonderful.”

Cool has worked for hhgregg for over ten years, but is new to the Pittsburgh area. He and his wife recently moved from Philadelphia with their three children, and are excited about making a difference in their new community.

About The Bradley Center

The Bradley Center is a regional behavioral healthcare organization that provides comprehensive and caring services to children to promote the physical, social, emotional, educational and spiritual growth of the children while keeping them safe.

Bradley was founded by The United Methodist Women in 1905, as The Elizabeth A. Bradley Home for Children and operated for many years as an orphanage. After World War II, The Bradley Home transitioned into interim housing for children whose parents were separated or divorced. By 1972, its mission evolved to serve dependent, neglected and abused children and was reincorporated as The Bradley Center.

Today, The Bradley Center serves over 200 children each year with the most challenging mental and behavioral health issues. The children often have histories of severe abuse and neglect. Bradley provides these children with a safe place where they can heal from their histories of trauma; get the symptomology of their mental illnesses managed; get an education; and move on to a new life full of possibilities, a life of fulfillment and productivity.
