“Assemble Afterschool” (assemblepgh.org/programs/assemble-after-school/) harnesses kids’ interest in mobile phone apps and social media, transforming them from passive users of technology into makers who build and create with it. The program, open to youth in 4th – 8th grade, will be offered from 4:00-6:30 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday beginning on January 6, 2015.
The lead Assemble Afterschool instructor, Julia Brown, was trained by Remake Learning’s Digital Corps program, an initiative of the Sprout Fund.
Students in the program will use tools like App Inventor, developed by MIT Media Lab so kids can make mobile phone apps, and Hummingbird, an introductory robotics kit designed at CMU. The program will also focus on hands-on making with power tools and digital fabrication methods like 3-D printing.

Assemble believes in the power of hands-on making to transform both education and children’s lives. Because Assemble believes that everyone should have access to 21st century skills, the program tuition will be offered on a sliding scale. The program will be limited to 15 students to ensure a low student-teacher ratio. About the Lead Instructor:
Julia Brown is an experienced Assemble instructor who also taught Assemble Afterschool last semester. She has also completed the Remake Learning Digital Corps training program. She will be assisted during the semester by guest teachers who are practicing scientists, artists, and technologists.
