Weinstein Imaging Associates makes 3D mammogram technology available to women in the Pittsburgh area for early detection of breast cancer. By means of leading-edge 3D digital mammography, radiologists now have a better look at breast tissue allowing for earlier identification of small cancers often invisible when using standard 2D mammography.
“By increasing image detail, improving definition of a mass and reducing superimposed breast tissue, 3D mammography is better able to detect small cancers and therefore increase breast cancer survival. On average 10 percent of women who have a traditional 2D mammogram will require additional mammographic views and possibly ultrasound to determine if a questionable area is real or overlapping tissue. Up to 80 percent of these women will have a “false-positive” exam, meaning that the area that looked suspicious on a screening mammogram, upon further testing was confirmed to be non-cancerous. 3D mammography, by providing 1 mm slices of the breast tissue, can reduce “false-positives” and the anxiety promoted by need for follow-up testing.” says Dr. Marcela Böhm-Vélez, President of Weinstein Imaging Associates.
The 3D breast mammography system used by Weinstein Imaging Associates is the latest generation of mammography equipment from Hologic, a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of healthcare for women throughout the world.
