SWAN Day Co-Founder, Martha Richards, to Speak at SWAN Day Pittsburgh 2012

PITTSBURGH, PA – (February 15, 2012) While the No Name Players team is hard at work on SWAN Day Pittsburgh 2012, bringing more and more amazing acts to the stage of the New Hazlett Theater on March 15th and 16th, it comes as no surprise that people everywhere are starting to take notice. Sponsors, donors, and other supporters are helping to make SWAN Day Pittsburgh 2012 the best event to-date, and No Name Players couldn’t be more thrilled. To top off their excitement, co-founder of the international SWAN Day movement, Martha Richards, is making a special trip to the Steel City to speak at the Opening Night festivities!

Last month, Richards announced that No Name Players, their Producing Artistic Director – Tressa Glover – and SWAN Day Pittsburgh have been named officialinternational partners for the amazing event! Taking notice of the outpouring of support the Pittsburgh community is giving the event this year, Richards is coming to experience, first hand, the world-premiere works by Pittsburgh-based dancers, musicians, poets, theatre artists, visual artists, performance artists and fashion designers in celebration of the Fourth Annual SWAN Day Pittsburgh.

Martha Richards has over thirty years of arts management experience, including sixteen years as Executive Director of WomenArts (1995 to the present), three years as the Executive Director of Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College in New York (1986-89) and five years as Managing Director of StageWest, a resident professional theatre based in Springfield, Massachusetts (1989-1993).

In 2007 Martha Richards was one of three U.S. finalists for the prestigious international Montblanc de la Culture Award in recognition of her innovative and tireless efforts as the Founder and Executive Director of WomenArts. The other two U.S. finalists were Quincy Jones and Wynton Marsalis (who won the award).

Richards has a B.A. in Economics from the University of California Berkeley and a J.D. from the University of California Hastings College of Law. She is a member of the California bar, and she was one of the founding directors of California Lawyers for the Arts, serving as its first Vice President. She has lectured on theatre management issues at Brooklyn College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Richards has had a life-long commitment to women’s issues and women artists, and she has served as a business advisor to many individual women artists and women-led arts organizations throughout her career. She served on the board of the Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts from its creation in 1996 until 2000, and she has been honored as one of three Founding Mothers of that organization. In April 2009 she was inducted into the BayPath College 21st Century Women Business Leaders Hall of Fame.
